A suction instrument for microsurgery.

چکیده
Troublesome bleeding from small blood vessels occurs during operations on the cornea and sclera. The bleeding from the smaller blood vessels will stop spontaneously if given time, the larger vessels may need to be cauterized. The traditional way of dealing with the blood by mopping it up with cotton swabs or cellulose sponges has some disadvantages. The bleeding point and the surrounding area has to be touched with a swab thus interrupting the operation. Bleeding often continues after the swab has been removed so that a completely dry field is available for surgery for only a fairly short period. The blood from a vessel soon after swabbing prevents accurate cautery application to a bleeding point as it quickly becomes obscured. All these difficulties can be overcome by using a suction instrument (see Figure) instead of a swab for clearing an operation site of blood. Dissection can usually be carried on while the instrument is being used as it functions effectively even when the tip is a little away from the bleeding point. It

A Study of Instrument Motion in Retinal Microsurgery
This paper reports on high-precision recordings of hand-held instrument motion during actual vitreoretinal microsurgery. The movement of a hand-held instrument during vitreoretinal microsurgery was recorded in six degrees of freedom. Data were acquired for 5 min using an inertial sensing module that has been developed for use with a commercially available microsurgical instrument. Maximum veloc...
متن کاملMultiuse of Disposable Microsurgical Instruments as a Cost-Efficient Alternative for Training and Research
Microsurgery demands significant preclinical training, often hampered by the high costs of the required microsurgery instruments. We hypothesized that recently available disposable microsurgery instruments provide sufficient quality and significantly reduced costs. In a comparative analysis with standard reusable instruments, participants performed equally with both instrument sets and recommen...
متن کاملActive handheld instrument for error compensation in microsurgery
Physiological hand tremor and other manual positioning errors limit precision in microsurgical procedures. Our research has involved development of adaptive algorithms and neural network methods for real-time compensation of such errors. This paper presents a novel design for an active hand-held microsurgical instrument to implement these algorithms, particularly during vitreoretinal microsurge...
متن کاملCRF-Based Model for Instrument Detection and Pose Estimation in Retinal Microsurgery
Detection of instrument tip in retinal microsurgery videos is extremely challenging due to rapid motion, illumination changes, the cluttered background, and the deformable shape of the instrument. For the same reason, frequent failures in tracking add the overhead of reinitialization of the tracking. In this work, a new method is proposed to localize not only the instrument center point but als...
متن کاملA “Smart” Force-Limiting Instrument for Microsurgery: Laboratory and In Vivo Validation
Residents are required to learn a multitude of skills during their microsurgical training. One such skill is the judicious application of force when handling delicate tissue. An instrument has been developed that indicates to the surgeon when a force threshold has been exceeded by providing vibrotactile feedback. The objective of this study was to validate the use of this "smart" force-limiting...
